Frank Doelger, producer – We’ve had an amazing time in Dubrovnik so far, the weather has been great, most of the cast and crew have come from a cold and rainy Northern Ireland so are more than happy to have the sun on their back. The City of Dubrovnik has been very supportive and we’ve used some absolutely stunning locations in and around the city. We are excited about filming in Dubrovnik and look forward to coming back next year. A location like Dubrovnik is very important to us because the story of the Game of Thrones takes place in a northern and a southern kingdom, we have great conditions for the northern kingdom in Ireland and Dubrovnik offers us the glorious sunshine and blue skies. These two different locations give the whole project a scope and scale. One of biggest concerns when we decided to came here was not to disturb the tourists and their experience of the city. So we’ve worked very hard to keep out of the way as much as possible. We want to come back year after year so it’s important that we work very closely with the local community and not to cause too many problems for the tourist industry. Hopefully our being here will be of interest to the tourists and not a hindrance.
Erika Milutin from Embassy Films Croatia - We have tried as much as possible to employ people from Dubrovnik in the whole project. There are around 100 local people employed everyday on the set, from security to extras, my estimate is that by the end of filing around 200 local people will have been employed in the filming. Also you have to take into account the number of firms from Dubrovnik that have been engaged in the production.
Dan Weiss, executive producer - When we first brought the idea of Game of Thrones to HBO and explained how the show should look and feel we had something like Dubrovnik in mind. In fact when I came to the city for the first time it was like walking into my own dream, it was exactly how I had pictured the scenery. So much of the city is ideal for filming, there is very little work needed to change the locations. The range of locations here is unbelievable, we’ve shot desert locations here, we’ve shot wasteland here and we’ve shot magnificent medieval architecture, not to forget the beautiful sea and coastline.
Andro Vlahušić, Mayor of Dubrovnik - The City of Dubrovnik immediately gave their full support to the project when we were approached by HBO and their representatives. Of course we will do everything in our power to co-operate with HBO to film subsequent serials in Dubrovnik, this is not just a one year project, this is a long term project. We would also like that a part of the set and props are left in the city so that they can be used as a tourist attraction. Los Angeles lives not only from movie production but from the tourist industry around the whole movie business. Of course Dubrovnik as a city and as a tourist attraction is much more important than any film or serial but this could offer another interesting aspect to our existing offer.
